Nerve plants come in so many different colours, sizes and patterns. They provide a guaranteed burst of colour to terrariums, and thrive there thanks to their love of humidity. Definitely a top choice plant for terrariums!
Everytime I think I've seen them all, I find another variety of Fittonia! Pink, green, red, rose, variegated, mosaic, colourful veins, white veins - you get the idea! There's no lack of choice when it comes to nerve plants. I stock about 8 varieties at the moment and they're a best seller. I'm usually sold out within a weekend of listing new stock!
Fittonia are relatively straightforward to take care of. The key is maintaining good moisture. Native to the forest floor, they like a humid environment, which is what makes them such great candidates for terrariums.
Keep the soil moist, but not soggy. Water well once the top of the soil starts to dry out. If the plant is starting to wither or wilt you can usually revive it by watering and misting.
Nerve plants do flower, but the flowers aren't usually preserved as they pale in comparison to the leaves' and waste the plant's energy to grow. Regularly trim tall shoots and flower buds to promote low and bushy growth.
This is a nice and easy plant to propagate. Simply take a sizable cutting with at least 2 nodes on it and most into moist soil. Roots usually grow in 2-3 weeks.
